Postponed: Workshop on Strategies for Working with Writers

The society's workshop on Strategies for working with writers, scheduled for Sunday 6 November, is to be postponed until 2012.

You will be informed as soon as possible of the new date for this valuable workshop.

 


Style Council forum broadcast

ABC will be broadcasting segments from the National Editors conference and Style Council public forum on the media's influence on usage.

October General Meeting: Wednesday 5 October 2011

 

What's different about indigenous writing? What's involved in mentorship projects?

If you've evern wondered, or maybe you're still wondering, mark your calendar for the Society of Editors' next general meeting. Our two speakers are Linda McBride-Yuke and Ellen van Neerven-Currie. Both are trainee editors in the black&write! Indigienous Editing Mentorship Project. Sue Abbey, who established the black&write! editing program, will also be with us.

The Story Conference

For the third year running the Story Conference is themed around "Creative Methods: Widening the World of Work" and is being held in Melbourne from 5-7 October 2011.

Sessions at this year’s conference would be of particular interest to the following professionals: Facilitators, Educators (academics, teachers, trainers), Community development & engagement practitioners, Writers, Consultants (internal, external, learning, OD), Coaches, Professional speakers, Managers, Leaders and Therapists.

Professional Development Workshops for Editors

We are delighted to announce a new training workshop option on Wednesday, 7 September 2011 as part of the ‘New Horizons for Editing and Publishing’ conference events.

Neil James, Executive Director of the Plain English Foundation, will present a workshop on Plain English for Editors. Please see the attached Workshop Summaries pdf for details.

In all, there are six one-day workshop options and they each run from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm on Wednesday 7, September:

  • Writing and Editing for the Web – Simon Hillier
  • Editing Oral History for Publication – Linda Shopes
  • Editing for Museum Exhibitions and Publications – Jennifer Blunden
  • Indexing for Editors – Glenda Browne
  • Running a Freelance Business – Julie Harders, Lan Wang, Abigail Nathan, Denise Holden and Lyn Fernance
  • Plain English for Editors – Neil James

The concurrent sessions will take place at the Dockside Conference Centre or nearby Star Room venue. At the moment places are available in all workshops but some are filling up fast. Workshops cost $250 for members of an Australian Society of Editors (including associate members).

The workshops represent a great opportunity for editors from around Australia to receive further trainin

g in specialised areas, in particular: Editing for Museum Exhibitions and Publications; Editing Oral History for Publication; and Indexing for Editors. Announcing the ABRElizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize

Australian Book Review is delighted to announce the ABRElizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize, worth a total of $8000.

Entries should be single-authored stories of between 2000 and 5000 words written by Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Results will be announced in October and the winning story will be published in the October 2011 (Fiction) issue.

This is an invaluable opportunity for new and established writers. Please forward this email to any friends or colleagues who may wish to enter.
